Community Transit Pass

A collaboration between SFU Community Trust and TransLink makes residents eligible for a subsidized Community Transit Pass. The first of its kind in North America, the pass aims to increase transit ridership in the community by providing a cost-effective alternative to the private automobile. The pass allows residents unlimited travel throughout TransLink’s service area for $29.67/month, compared to $130 for a regular pass.

Car Sharing

As a further effort to provide a range of transportation options in the community, the SFU Community Trust established a partnership with CAN, the Cooperative Auto Network, to provide residents access to community automobiles located throughout the community on an hourly or daily basis.

Childcare

UniverCity currently offers waitlist priority for childcare services to residents through a partnership with the SFU Childcare Society (SFUCCS). These services are provided to all age groups at the SFUCS facility on the west side of the SFU Campus. Services for younger children aged one to three are also provided within a purpose-built facility within the community located in the Verdant development.

In the near future, the Trust will be moving forward with a second childcare facility within the community for older children (aged three to five years). This new, centrally located 50-space facility is will be a leading-edge green building that aims to have little or no impact on its surrounding environment.  Conceived as an innovative space for child development, it will be based on the  Reggio Emilio concept of childcare and early childhood education.

University Highlands Elementary School

September of 2010 will bring UniverCity residents and their children a new elementary school. Developed through collaboration among the SFU Community Trust, the Burnaby Board of Education, SFU, the City of Burnaby and the BC Ministry of Education, the future elementary school at UniverCity will provide quality education for the community’s youngsters while also acting as an important community facility.

More information on the new school at UniverCity is available from the Burnaby Board of Education's website. Click here to access it.

Pedestrian & Biking Network

An extensive network of pedestrian pathways and bike trails link residences to shops and services on University High Street, the future elementary school, the neighbourhood park, and two transit stops. These pathways are also designed to connect residents to hiking trails in the adjacent Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area. Walking and biking are strongly associated with good health and a thriving, socially active and connected community.
